Acupuncture
Treatment
John Boyd has used acupunture to successfully treat a variety of conditions. Musculo-skeletal pain responds well to acupuncture and conditions such as lick granuloma, dermatitis and bladder dysfunction have also been treated successfully. In order to audit response to treatment an 'Owner directed veterinary treatment outcome profile' (ODVOP) is used. The owner chooses four functional problems resulting from the animal's problem and each is initially scored from 0 to 6 and scored again before each subsequent treatment session. As the animal improves, the score reduces. Case 1 - Lick granuloma
Case 2 - Leg lameness 8 year old male Boxer with a chronic right shoulder lameness for 2 years. Conventional treatment had not cured the problem. Examination revealed two painful points, one in the right shoulder muscle and one in the right triceps muscle. These two points were dry needled. After 1 week the dog had improved significantly. The lameness had decreased and pain reduced markedly. The ODVOP had reduced from 18 to 10 following one treatment. Case 3 - Chronic musculo-skeletal pain 5 year 6 months old male German shepherd dog was brought in for euthanasia because of severe chronic musculo-skeletal pain in the back, right fore leg and both hind legs. Conventional treatment with large doses of steroids was unable to control bouts of severe pain. The dog was given four sessions of acupuncture and showed immediate improvement. Improvement continued after each treatment session. It is no longer on any medication and has been pain free for 3 months. The ODVOP reduced from 19 to 2 after 4 sessions of acupuncture.
