Season
of bugs looking for blood Neil Geddes Can you believe it? The sun has actually shone for three consecutive days and, what's more, it's warm!
Unfortunately for you, me and your pets, this means the return of the dreaded berry bug. Berry Bugs are like tiny ticks which require a blood-meal before they can mature to the next stage. They live in the grass and, like ticks, they attach themselves to the victim as they pass by. Don't worry, though, they are only the size of a pinhead. The trouble comes when you get several berry bugs attaching or if you are allergic to their bite. Classically, they only attach around the feet and forearms but it really depends what size you and your pet are, and how long the grass. Usually they are pretty easy to spot as they are bright orange. So, if you and your pet have suddenly started scratching, have a look for Berry bugs as well as all your normal parasites, like fleas. Treatment requires the use of a parasitic spray such as Frontline but, as ever, prevention is better. If you know your pet is susceptible, spray now before you get a case of dermatitis to deal with as well. Talking of irritating parasites, remember that this is also the season for bluebottles and maggots. This applies particularly to rabbit owners. You must check your rabbits regularly, i.e. daily, to make sure that there are no droppings matted around the rabbit's tail. Flies lay their eggs in faeces or wounds if possible. The eggs then hatch out as maggots - and the rest you know. Prevention involves removing all soiled material regularly, including bedding. If you are unlucky enough to have a pet who becomes infected you must seek veterinary treatment urgently. |
