When Mr Smith joined the practice in the early 1960s, the practice became known as Ferguson and Smith and they continued at Dysart Road until the death of Mr Ferguson a few years later.  The building in Dysart Road is now occupied by Fife Posting Funeral Service.  In 1965 Mr Smith moved the practice to 146 Commercial Street.  Miss Buchanan, a Classics graduate from St Andrews University became the practice receptionist and bookkeeper.  In 1969 John Boyd joined and the practice was renamed Smith and Boyd.  Although the majority of the work was still with farm animals, the practice developed a reputation in the treatment of pet animals and this area of work increased over the next thirty years.  The partnership of Smith and Boyd continued for seventeen years until the retirement of Mr Smith in 1986.  At this time John Boyd redeveloped the Leven surgery and began to operate it as a full time branch, with surgical and in-patient facilities.  The Smith and Boyd name remained with the practice for a further ten years.

In 1997 Ian Paterson joined the practice.  He has a special interest in veterinary orthpaedics and surgery and has obtained the certificate in Small Animal Surgery.

At this time the effects of BSE and the reduction of government support, plunged the agricultural industry into recession.  As farm work for the practice reduced, a decision was reluctantly made to discontinue farm work.  So after almost one hundred years of service to the local farming community we decided to concentrate the practice efforts on the small animal sector.

The result was expansion of the practice and in 2002 we employed a fifth veterinarian.  In February 2003 the practice expanded further by acquiring a veterinary practice in Glenrothes.  This excellent facility enables clients in the Glenrothes area to benefit from the skills and quality care, which is the hallmark of St Clair Veterinary Group.

As the practice has grown, so has the number of staff.  From one vet and a receptionist in Commercial Street in 1965, the staff now totals over thirty persons, including seven veterinarians, a practice manager, a practice accountant, seven reception staff and fourteen nursing staff.  Our team is dedicated to quality veterinary care where your pet is treated as one of the family.  St Clair Veterinary Group offers the highest possible standard of veterinary care and treatment to our patients. We are very proud of our achievements and look forward to the future.
